CFTC Launched Major Polymarket Investigation Earlier This Year

The Commodity Futures Trading Commission has been running a sweeping investigation into Polymarket, the popular prediction market platform, according to sources cited by the New York Times.

The probe kicked off earlier this year. But it's not the only time Polymarket landed on the agency's radar.

A separate investigation was also underway — until the CFTC's former acting head shut it down in July 2025. That move reportedly overruled the agency's own enforcement attorneys who had been pursuing questions about whether Polymarket ran afoul of regulations.

The dual-track scrutiny highlights the tension inside the CFTC over how aggressively to police prediction markets. One investigation got the green light. The other got killed from the top.

Polymarket has exploded in popularity but continues to face regulatory uncertainty around its core product.
