OpenAI Drops GPT-5.6 in Three Flavors Under Government Watch

OpenAI just dropped GPT-5.6, and it comes in a trio: Sol, Terra, and Luna. The rollout started Friday, but don't expect open access anytime soon.

The company is keeping the release extremely tight — roughly 20 companies get to kick the tires in a limited preview. That's it.

Here's where it gets interesting. OpenAI says it's restricting access to all three model versions at the request of the U.S. government. Every participating company is being disclosed to federal authorities.

The government didn't just ask nicely — OpenAI is actively complying with the request to gate who gets in. The participant list goes straight to Washington.

No word yet on when broader access rolls out or what distinguishes Sol, Terra, and Luna from each other. For now, this is one of the most restricted major model launches we've seen from OpenAI.
