WhatsApp Tests Paid Subscription Tier Called WhatsApp Plus

WhatsApp is jumping on the paid subscription bandwagon. The messaging giant is testing a new tier called WhatsApp Plus, joining the likes of Instagram Plus and Snapchat+ in the quest to monetize power users.

The subscription bundles a grab bag of personalization features. Expanded pinned chats, custom chat lists, new themes, customizable app icons, and unique ringtones are all on the table. Nothing mission-critical — this is squarely a cosmetic and convenience play.

The move follows a well-established Meta playbook. Instagram already rolled out its own Plus tier, and Snapchat has proven the model works with Snapchat+, which has attracted millions of paying subscribers willing to shell out for premium perks.

No word yet on pricing or when the feature might roll out broadly. For now, it remains in testing.
