Tencent Secretly Building AI Agent for WeChat

Tencent is quietly developing an AI agent for WeChat, testing models from multiple Chinese AI companies.

Tencent Secretly Building AI Agent for WeChat

Tencent is working on a confidential AI agent designed for WeChat, its massive messaging platform. The goal: leapfrog Chinese AI rivals who've already staked their claims in the space.

According to The Information, the company has been testing large language models from several providers — including Zhipu, Alibaba, and DeepSeek — as it figures out what will power the new agent. The competition it's gunning for? Alibaba's Qwen and ByteDance's Doubao, both of which have gained significant traction.

Embedding an AI agent directly into WeChat would be a massive distribution play. The app boasts over a billion users and functions as China's de facto super app — handling everything from messaging to payments to mini-programs. If Tencent nails the integration, it could instantly become one of the most widely used AI products on the planet.
