OpenAI Drops GPT-5.3 Instant, Promises Less "Cringe"
OpenAI's latest default ChatGPT model aims for a smoother tone and fewer hallucinations than its predecessor.
OpenAI rolled out GPT-5.3 Instant on Tuesday, replacing GPT-5.2 Instant as ChatGPT's default model. The headline selling point? It should sound less "cringe."
The company says the updated model delivers a smoother, more direct conversational style compared to its predecessor. Gone — or at least reduced — is the overly eager, try-hard tone that users have complained about.
Beyond vibes, there are practical improvements. OpenAI claims GPT-5.3 Instant comes with lower hallucination rates, meaning the model should fabricate fewer things that sound confident but are completely wrong.
It's a notable iteration in OpenAI's ongoing effort to make its chatbot feel less like a people-pleasing intern and more like a useful tool. Whether users actually notice the difference remains to be seen — but at minimum, the "cringe" label suggests OpenAI is very aware of the criticism.
