MatX Raises $500M+ to Take on Nvidia in AI Chips

MatX just pulled in more than $500 million in fresh funding. The AI chip startup, founded by two former members of Google's semiconductor team, is gunning straight for Nvidia's throne.

The round was led by Jane Street and Situational Awareness — a notable pairing of a quantitative trading giant and an AI-focused fund betting big on custom silicon.

The company is building chips designed specifically for AI workloads, joining a growing wave of startups trying to crack Nvidia's iron grip on the accelerator market. With Google chip pedigree and a war chest north of half a billion dollars, MatX has the resources to at least make things interesting.

Whether anyone can meaningfully dent Nvidia's dominance remains the trillion-dollar question. But the money keeps flowing to those willing to try.
