Indian AI Startup Sarvam Drops Indus Chat App in Beta

Sarvam just shipped Indus, a new AI chat app now available in beta for both web and mobile. The Bengaluru-based startup is laser-focused on one thing: building AI that actually works for India's local languages.

Powering the whole thing is Sarvam's own 105-billion-parameter model — Sarvam 105B. That's a serious chunk of compute dedicated to serving users who don't default to English.

The play here is clear. India has over a billion potential AI users, and most of them don't primarily communicate in English. Sarvam is betting that a purpose-built multilingual model can carve out territory that global AI giants have largely ignored.

Indus is live now. Whether it can hold up against the ChatGPTs and Geminis of the world on Indian language tasks is the real test ahead.
