Lego Built a Custom Smart Brick Packed With Sensors
Lego's Creative Play Lab developed a sensor-loaded digital brick with a custom chip and proprietary comms system.
Lego is going digital — literally. The company's Creative Play Lab has engineered what it calls the Smart Brick, a sensor-packed digital building block designed to snap right into existing Lego sets and add entirely new layers of interactivity.
The brick houses a custom-designed chip and a proprietary communication system built from scratch. The goal: seamless integration with the plastic bricks already sitting on millions of shelves worldwide. No awkward add-ons. No separate ecosystems. Just plug it into what you've already got.
The engineering challenge was significant. Lego had to miniaturize custom silicon, multiple sensors, and wireless communication hardware into something that still looks and connects like a standard Lego piece.
It's a bold bet on blending physical and digital play without abandoning the brick-by-brick experience that made Lego iconic in the first place.
