Apple Podcasts Goes All-In on Video This Spring

Apple Podcasts is finally getting serious about video. The company announced it will roll out "advanced video capabilities" to its podcast platform this spring.

The headline feature: users will be able to switch between watching and listening to shows on the fly. It's a direct play at the YouTube-dominated video podcast space, where creators have been flocking for years.

The move is notable given Apple essentially invented the modern podcast ecosystem. The company built the infrastructure that made audio-first podcasting mainstream, but it's been conspicuously late to the video game.

YouTube and Spotify have both aggressively courted video podcasters, leaving Apple playing catch-up on a format it helped create. Whether these new tools are enough to pull creators back into Apple's orbit remains to be seen — but at least the platform is finally showing up to the fight.
