Alibaba's AI Chatbot Overwhelmed, Pauses Coupon Campaign

Alibaba's AI chatbot Qwen hit a wall. The company temporarily suspended its coupon-issuing feature after a flood of users overwhelmed the system.

The promotion launched February 6 as part of Alibaba's broader push into agentic AI—systems that can take actions on behalf of users. Handing out coupons was supposed to showcase that capability. Instead, it exposed the platform's scaling limits.

The timing stings. Alibaba has been aggressively marketing Qwen's agentic features, positioning the chatbot as more than just a conversation partner. The coupon campaign was meant to demonstrate real-world utility.

No word yet on when the feature returns. For now, Alibaba's AI ambitions are on pause while engineers figure out how to handle success that came a little too fast.
