Roblox Rolls Out Biometric Age Checks Amid Privacy Backlash
Roblox is launching facial age verification to sort users into age-based accounts, drawing fire over privacy concerns.
Roblox is flipping the switch on a biometric age-checking tool this month. The system will scan users' faces to verify their age and slot them into age-appropriate accounts. It's a big move for a platform that skews heavily young.
The rollout isn't exactly smooth sailing. Privacy advocates are raising red flags about collecting biometric data from what is largely a kid-heavy user base. Handing over facial scans to a gaming platform is, understandably, making people uneasy.
Roblox's head of safety product policy acknowledged the friction in a statement to NBC News. "Not everyone is going to be happy all the time," the exec said, adding that the company believes its safety improvements justify the pushback.
It's the classic tech trade-off: better child safety versus deeper data collection. Roblox is betting users will accept the deal.
