AI Now Blamed for 88K US Job Cuts in Just Five Months
AI-related layoffs through May 2026 already dwarf the entire 2025 total, per Challenger, Gray & Christmas data.
AI is eating jobs at an accelerating clip. Out of roughly 398,000 US job cuts announced through May 2026, employers pointed to artificial intelligence as the reason for about 88,000 of them. That already blows past the ~54,000 AI-linked cuts recorded across all of 2025.
The numbers come from outplacement firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas, which has tracked AI as a stated reason for layoffs since 2023. The trend line is steep and getting steeper.
In May alone, AI accounted for nearly 40% of all announced job cuts — the highest share since tracking began. That's not a blip. It's a pattern.
Companies are no longer shy about naming the machine as the replacement. Whether that honesty is refreshing or terrifying depends on which side of the layoff notice you're standing on.
