Kickstarter Reverses Mature Content Crackdown After Backlash

Kickstarter just hit the undo button on its controversial new mature content restrictions. The crowdfunding giant pulled back the tougher rules after creators pushed back hard against the changes.

The company's explanation? Blame the payment plumbing. Kickstarter says it implemented the stricter policies because of requirements from Stripe, its payment processor. Stripe's own content policies apparently forced Kickstarter's hand — or so the platform claims.

Creator backlash was swift enough to make Kickstarter reconsider. The retraction signals that platforms caught between payment processor demands and creator freedom face an increasingly uncomfortable balancing act.

This is a familiar pattern in the creator economy. Payment processors wield enormous behind-the-scenes power over what content platforms can host. When that power surfaces publicly, nobody looks great — least of all the platform stuck in the middle.
