The European Parliament just hit the brakes on its own AI rulebook. Lawmakers voted to delay multiple EU AI Act deadlines, giving companies significantly more breathing room on compliance.
The biggest shift: high-risk AI system requirements now won't kick in until December 2027. Deadlines for watermarking AI-generated content are also getting pushed back.
But it's not all loosening up. Parliament simultaneously voted to ban nudify apps — the AI tools that generate non-consensual nude imagery of real people. That's a notable tightening even as other timelines relax.
The delays signal that EU regulators are recognizing the practical challenges of enforcing the world's most ambitious AI legislation on schedule. Companies building high-risk AI systems just got extra years to get their houses in order. Whether they'll actually use that time wisely is another question entirely.
