OpenAI Wants ChatGPT on Google's UK Search Choice Screen

OpenAI is pushing UK regulators to force Google to include AI chatbots alongside traditional search engines on Chrome and Android.

OpenAI Wants ChatGPT on Google's UK Search Choice Screen

OpenAI is making a bold regulatory play in the UK. The ChatGPT maker has formally petitioned the Competition and Markets Authority to expand Google's mandated default search engine choice screen to include AI chatbots that offer search functionality.

The filing targets both Chrome and Android — Google's two dominant gateways to the web. OpenAI wants AI-powered alternatives like ChatGPT listed right alongside traditional search engines when users are prompted to pick their default.

It's a strategic move. Google already faces a CMA-mandated choice screen designed to level the playing field for rival search providers. OpenAI argues that AI chatbots with search capabilities now compete directly in that same space and deserve a slot on the screen.

If successful, this could fundamentally reshape how millions of UK users discover and interact with search — putting ChatGPT one tap away from becoming their default.
