Arm breaks from its licensing-only model with a custom AI processor called the AGI CPU, backed by two AI giants.

Arm Builds Its Own AI Chip, Lands Meta and OpenAI as Customers

Arm is no longer just designing chips for everyone else. The SoftBank-owned company has unveiled the AGI CPU — its own AI chip — marking a major strategic shift from its traditional role as a chip architecture licensor.

The move puts Arm in direct competition with the companies it typically supplies blueprints to. Instead of just selling designs, Arm is now building and selling silicon.

Meta and OpenAI have signed on as the first customers for the long-awaited processor. Both companies have been aggressively scaling their AI infrastructure, making them natural early adopters for new hardware.

The AGI CPU represents Arm's biggest bet yet on the AI boom. Whether this pivot strains relationships with existing licensees remains to be seen, but landing two of the biggest names in AI out of the gate is a strong opening move.
