OpenAI Snaps Up AI Security Firm Promptfoo

OpenAI just agreed to buy Promptfoo, a company that specializes in finding and fixing security flaws in AI systems. The acquisition will fold Promptfoo's capabilities directly into OpenAI Frontier.

Promptfoo isn't some scrappy unknown. The company claims more than 25% of Fortune 500 companies already rely on its tools. That's a serious footprint in enterprise AI security.

The deal is squarely aimed at beefing up OpenAI's agentic security testing and evaluation chops. As AI agents get more autonomous and powerful, the attack surface grows fast. OpenAI clearly wants that defensive layer built in-house rather than bolted on later.

It's a strategic play. OpenAI gets proven enterprise security tooling and an existing customer base of major corporations. Promptfoo gets the resources and scale of the biggest name in AI. Both sides win — assuming integration goes smoothly.
