Circle, Stripe Race to Build Payment Rails for AI Agents

Circle and Stripe are in a dead sprint to build payments infrastructure for a future where AI agents transact with each other autonomously. Coinbase is in the mix too.

The core idea: stablecoin-based payment systems purpose-built for agentic commerce. Traditional payment rails choke on microtransactions — the fees alone make tiny payments between AI agents pointless. Stablecoins fix that by making sub-cent transactions economically viable.

These companies are essentially building financial plumbing for a world that doesn't fully exist yet. The bet is that AI agents will increasingly need to buy services, data, and compute from other agents without human intervention. That requires fast, cheap, programmable money.

It's a massive infrastructure play. If agentic AI scales the way these companies expect, whoever owns the payment layer owns a chokepoint in the entire AI economy.
