Google Stands by Anthropic Despite Pentagon Supply Chain Flag
Google will keep offering Anthropic's AI tech to clients, just not for defense work, following DOD risk designation.
The Pentagon tagged Anthropic as a supply chain risk, and the tech giants are responding with a collective shrug — at least on the commercial side.
Google confirmed it will continue providing Anthropic's AI technology to its customers, carving out an exception only for defense-related projects. The move mirrors Microsoft's earlier announcement that it too would maintain its Anthropic partnership for non-defense work.
The Department of Defense's designation effectively walls off Anthropic from military contracts and related supply chains. But both cloud heavyweights are drawing a clear line: Pentagon concerns won't bleed into their commercial AI offerings.
For Anthropic, losing defense pathways stings, but keeping two of the biggest cloud platforms as distribution partners means its enterprise AI business stays largely intact. The startup's models remain available where the money actually flows — enterprise and commercial deployments.
