OpenAI Is Building Its Own GitHub Rival

OpenAI is working on its own alternative to GitHub, according to a report from The Information. The project is still in its early stages, but the motivation is clear: OpenAI's engineers got fed up with mounting outages on Microsoft's dominant code repository platform.

GitHub is the go-to tool for millions of software developers to store and manage their code. It's also owned by Microsoft — which happens to be OpenAI's biggest investor and partner. Building a competing product adds another wrinkle to that already complicated relationship.

The effort is described as nascent, meaning don't expect a public launch anytime soon. But the fact that OpenAI is investing resources into replacing such a fundamental piece of developer infrastructure signals serious frustration with reliability issues.
