Amazon's AGI Lab Chief David Luan Heads for the Exit

David Luan, who ran Amazon's artificial general intelligence lab, is departing the company. His tenure lasted less than two years — a relatively short stint that began when Amazon scooped up his AI startup Adept in an acqui-hire deal.

Acqui-hires are supposed to lock in talent. Amazon brought Luan and his team aboard specifically to bolster its AGI ambitions. Now the person leading that charge is walking away.

The departure raises questions about Amazon's AGI strategy and whether the tech giant can retain top AI talent acquired through these increasingly common startup absorption deals. Adept had been building AI agents capable of performing software tasks, making it a natural fit for Amazon's broader AI push.

No word yet on who will take over the AGI lab or what Luan plans to do next.
