Half of Anthropic's AI Agent Calls Are Just Software Engineering

Anthropic data reveals software engineering eats ~50% of agentic AI usage, leaving massive untapped verticals wide open.

Half of Anthropic's AI Agent Calls Are Just Software Engineering

Software engineering is hogging roughly half of all AI agent tool calls on Anthropic's platform. That's according to fresh data from the company itself, highlighted by Y Combinator president Garry Tan.

The other 50%? Scattered across a bunch of verticals that nobody's seriously building for yet.

Tan frames the lopsided usage as a greenfield opportunity. Most founders are piling into the same coding-focused AI space while entire industries sit largely untouched by agentic AI tools.

The data paints a clear picture of where the market stands right now. Developers adopted AI agents fastest because the use case was obvious — write code, debug code, ship code. But agentic AI isn't a developer-only tool. It's a platform.

The founders who figure out the non-obvious verticals first will have a massive head start.
