OpenAI Wants $60 CPM for ChatGPT Ads
OpenAI is pricing ChatGPT ads at $60 per thousand impressions, matching Netflix's launch-era ad rates.
OpenAI isn't being shy about monetizing ChatGPT. The company is charging advertisers $60 per 1,000 impressions — a premium price tag that puts it in the same tier as Netflix when the streamer first rolled out its ad-supported tier.
The steep CPM signals OpenAI's confidence in ChatGPT's audience value. For context, most digital display ads run between $2 and $10 CPM. OpenAI is asking for six to thirty times that.
Back in May 2024, the big question hanging over OpenAI was simple: how does ChatGPT actually make money? CEO Sam Altman addressed the monetization puzzle during a talk at Harvard. Now we have an answer — and it's an expensive one for brands wanting in.
Whether advertisers will stomach that price long-term remains the real test. Netflix eventually had to adjust. OpenAI might too.
