OpenAI Ditches Nvidia for Cerebras on New Codex Model
GPT-5.3-Codex-Spark becomes OpenAI's first AI model running on chips from Nvidia competitor Cerebras Systems.
OpenAI just made a bold move in the chip wars. The company is releasing GPT-5.3-Codex-Spark, its first AI model built to run on silicon from Cerebras Systems instead of the usual Nvidia hardware.
That's a significant shift. Nvidia has dominated the AI chip market, and OpenAI has been one of its biggest customers. Now the ChatGPT maker is diversifying its supply chain with the semiconductor startup.
The timing matters. OpenAI says Codex now boasts more than 1 million weekly active users, making the coding assistant a major product in its lineup.
Whether this signals a broader pivot away from Nvidia or just a one-off experiment remains to be seen. But for Cerebras, landing OpenAI as a customer is a massive validation of its tech.
