Google Bails on $100M Pentagon Autonomous Drone Swarm Project

Google has abruptly pulled out of a $100 million Pentagon prize challenge aimed at developing technology for voice-controlled, autonomous drone swarms. The decision came after an internal ethics review raised concerns about the project.

The challenge sought to create systems that would let operators command swarms of autonomous drones using voice controls — a significant leap in military automation. Google's withdrawal leaves a gap in one of the Defense Department's more ambitious tech competitions.

This isn't Google's first dance with Pentagon controversy. The company famously dropped its involvement in Project Maven back in 2018 after employee backlash over AI being used in military drone surveillance. The pattern is clear: Google keeps bumping up against the line where its AI capabilities meet defense applications, and its ethics guardrails keep pulling it back.

No word yet on which companies remain in the running for the challenge.
