Microsoft Goes All-In on Africa to Fend Off DeepSeek
Microsoft is training 3M Africans on AI tools and partnering with telecom giant MTN to push Microsoft 365 across the continent.
Microsoft is making a massive play for the African market. The tech giant is ramping up efforts to get its AI tools into the hands of millions across the continent — and the motivation is clear: DeepSeek is breathing down its neck.
The push includes training 3 million people on AI and inking a partnership with MTN, one of Africa's largest telecom operators, to sell Microsoft 365 subscriptions. It's a classic distribution play — piggyback on existing telecom infrastructure to reach users who might otherwise never touch a Microsoft product.
Africa represents a largely untapped market for enterprise AI tools, and Microsoft clearly doesn't want to cede that ground to cheaper Chinese alternatives. By combining AI education with direct sales channels through MTN, Redmond is betting that early adoption will lock in long-term loyalty before rivals gain a foothold.
