Dorsey Axes 40% of Block to Rebuild It as 'Mini AGI'
Block CEO Jack Dorsey cut nearly half his workforce to reconstruct the company around artificial intelligence.
Jack Dorsey just gutted Block. The CEO and cofounder slashed 40% of the company's workforce in a sweeping move he says is necessary to rebuild Block "as an intelligence."
In an exclusive interview with WIRED's Steven Levy, Dorsey laid out his vision: he wants Block to "feel like a mini AGI." That's not a throwaway line — it's apparently the entire strategic rationale behind one of the most aggressive layoffs in recent fintech history.
Dorsey also weighed in on Elon Musk's X, the platform he cofounded as Twitter before departing. Details on that front remain light, but the Block restructuring is the headline.
The message is clear. Dorsey isn't trimming fat. He's tearing down the house to rebuild it with AI at the foundation. Whether that bet pays off is another question entirely.
