Discord Won't Require Face Scans for Most Users' Age Verification

Discord reassures users that AI-based age prediction will spare most from invasive ID checks.

Discord Won't Require Face Scans for Most Users' Age Verification

Discord is rolling out age verification, but don't panic about uploading your face just yet. The platform says the "vast majority" of users won't need to submit face scans or government IDs to prove their age.

The reasoning is two-fold. First, most people aren't trying to access age-restricted content anyway. Second, Discord's AI system will attempt to predict whether users are old enough based on other signals.

Only when both conditions fail — you want restricted content AND the AI isn't confident you're of age — will you face the biometric gauntlet.

It's a pragmatic approach to an increasingly thorny problem. Age verification mandates are spreading globally, and platforms are scrambling to comply without alienating their entire user base. Discord's betting its AI can thread that needle for most users.
