Micron Lobbies Congress to Restrict Chinese Chipmakers' Equipment
America's biggest memory chipmaker is pushing hard for new export controls targeting its Chinese competitors.
Micron Technology, the largest U.S. memory chipmaker, is actively lobbying Congress to pass the so-called "MATCH Act." The legislation would slap new export restrictions on equipment that Chinese rivals rely on to manufacture chips.
The move would essentially tighten the screws on China's ability to produce competing memory chips by cutting off access to critical manufacturing tools. Micron is reportedly a driving force behind the congressional push.
This isn't Micron playing defense for the first time. The company has been locked in an escalating trade war dynamic with Chinese chipmakers, and getting Congress to codify equipment restrictions into law would give its competitive position a serious structural boost.
The MATCH Act represents yet another front in the ongoing U.S.-China semiconductor battle — this time with a major American chipmaker explicitly pulling the legislative strings.
