SK Hynix Dropping $8B on ASML's EUV Machines Through 2027
SK Hynix is spending nearly $8 billion on cutting-edge EUV lithography tools from ASML to compete with Samsung in DRAM and HBM.
SK Hynix is going on a massive shopping spree. The memory chip giant plans to pour 11.9 trillion won — roughly $7.9 billion — into extreme ultraviolet lithography chipmaking equipment from ASML through 2027.
EUV lithography tools are the most advanced chipmaking machines on the planet, and ASML is the sole supplier. Getting your hands on enough of them is basically table stakes for cutting-edge semiconductor manufacturing.
The spending push comes as SK Hynix competes directly with Samsung to supply DRAM and high-bandwidth memory (HBM). HBM has become one of the hottest commodities in the chip world, driven by surging demand from AI infrastructure buildouts.
That's a serious capital commitment to tooling alone. SK Hynix is clearly betting big that advanced memory will remain a high-demand, high-margin business for years to come.
