Pentagon Shrugs Off Anthropic Lawsuit Over Military AI Use

The Pentagon isn't sweating Anthropic's lawsuit. Emil Michael, a top defense official, called the AI company's legal action an "expected reaction" and essentially ruled out a negotiated resolution.

"I don't think there's a scenario where this gets resolved in that way," Michael told Bloomberg, signaling the government plans to push forward rather than return to the bargaining table.

The dispute centers on military use of Anthropic's AI technology. The two sides had apparently been in negotiations before things went legal. Now those talks appear dead.

Anthropic has long positioned itself as the safety-focused AI lab. Going to court against the Pentagon over military applications fits that brand — but Michael's comments suggest the defense establishment views the lawsuit as a speed bump, not a roadblock.

This fight is far from over.
