Epic and Google Strike Deal to Open Up the Play Store

Google and Epic Games just proposed a settlement that could reshape Android's app ecosystem. The deal would require Google to share its entire Play Store app catalog with competing app stores.

On top of that, Google would create a registered app store program for Android, giving rival marketplaces a legitimate path to operate alongside the Play Store.

The proposal aims to resolve the long-running antitrust battle between Alphabet's Google and Fortnite maker Epic Games. Epic has been waging war against app store monopolies for years, taking on both Google and Apple over their control of mobile software distribution.

If approved, the settlement could fundamentally change how Android users discover and download apps — breaking Google's grip on the distribution pipeline that has long served as a gatekeeper for the platform.
