Pentagon Agrees to OpenAI's Safety Red Lines for Classified Use

The Department of Defense has apparently greenlit OpenAI's safety guardrails, paving the way for the company's AI technology to operate in classified government settings.

According to Axios, the Pentagon accepted OpenAI's safety red lines — conditions the company set as non-negotiable before allowing its tech into sensitive military environments. Those conditions reportedly mirror the ones Anthropic had already established for its own government deployments.

The DOD didn't respond to requests for comment on the arrangement.

The deal signals a significant step in OpenAI's push into defense and national security work. By holding firm on safety boundaries that match its competitor Anthropic's framework, OpenAI managed to land classified access without gutting its safety commitments.

For the Pentagon, it means another major AI player is now cleared for its most sensitive operations.
