US Chip Makers Hit by Rare Earth Crisis Despite China Deal
Rare earth shipments to the US remain scarce months after the October 2025 detente with China, squeezing semiconductor suppliers.
That October 2025 detente with China was supposed to ease things. It hasn't.
US semiconductor and aerospace suppliers are facing deepening rare earth shortages, according to Reuters. Despite diplomatic progress late last year, actual shipments of these critical materials are still barely trickling into the country.
The situation is bad enough that at least two suppliers have started turning away clients — a stark sign that supply simply cannot meet demand.
Rare earths are essential for everything from advanced chip manufacturing to defense systems. China dominates global production and processing of these materials, giving Beijing enormous leverage regardless of what any trade agreement says on paper.
The gap between diplomatic handshakes and physical supply chains is widening. US companies that depend on these materials are running out of patience — and inventory.
