iPhones and iPads Score NATO Approval for Classified Data

Apple just pulled off something no consumer tech company has done before. iPhones and iPads running iOS 26 and iPadOS 26 are now NATO-approved for handling classified data up to the "restricted" level.

That makes them the first consumer devices to clear that bar. Ever.

NATO's classification system has multiple tiers, and "restricted" is the entry point for sensitive material. Getting consumer hardware greenlit at any level is a significant milestone — these are devices billions of people carry in their pockets, not hardened government-issue gear.

The approval signals serious confidence in Apple's security architecture on its latest operating systems. It also opens the door for NATO personnel to potentially ditch specialized hardware for everyday Apple devices when working with lower-tier classified information.

Defense procurement just got a lot more interesting.
