India's AI Summit Exposes Gap Between Ambition and Influence
India's push for global AI governance got a cold shoulder from the US and its tech giants at the country's AI summit.
India hosted an AI summit aimed at positioning itself as a key voice in global AI governance. It didn't go as planned.
The US and its major tech companies largely brushed off India's attempts to shape international AI rules. The world's most populous nation is still struggling to carve out a meaningful role in an industry overwhelmingly dominated by two players: the US and China.
The summit laid bare the hard limits of India's AI ambitions. Despite its massive population, growing tech workforce, and vocal stance on AI regulation, the country lacks the leverage to move the needle when Washington and Silicon Valley aren't interested in listening.
For India, the takeaway is blunt. Having opinions on AI governance is one thing. Having the infrastructure, investment, and homegrown AI models to back them up is another entirely.
