Microsoft's Own AI Safety Team Got Ignored by Leadership

Here's a fun internal contradiction: Microsoft's AI safety team developed technical standards for identifying AI-generated content across the web. Solid work. Important work. The kind of thing you'd think a company betting its entire future on AI would embrace.

Microsoft's Chief Security Officer said no thanks — or more precisely, declined to commit to deploying those standards across Microsoft's own platforms.

The timing is rough. AI-generated deception is everywhere now, from deepfakes to synthetic text flooding online spaces. The high-profile cases are easy enough to catch. It's the subtle stuff that's eroding trust at scale.

So Microsoft built the detection tools, then chose not to use them company-wide. The safety team does the research. Leadership does the math. And the gap between those two things keeps getting wider.
