Medtronic's Spinal Surgery Robot Gets FDA Green Light
The Stealth AXiS system clears FDA review, giving Medtronic a new robotic platform for spine procedures.
Medtronic just scored FDA clearance for its Stealth AXiS spinal surgery system, adding another robotic tool to the increasingly crowded surgical robotics arena.
The system is designed to handle a broad spectrum of spinal procedures across different clinical environments. Medtronic engineered it to accommodate varying surgeon preferences and levels of case complexity — essentially aiming for a one-platform-fits-many approach.
That flexibility matters. Spinal surgery robotics is a fiercely competitive space, with players like Globus Medical and Stryker all vying for operating room real estate. Medtronic already has a significant footprint in surgical navigation, and the Stealth AXiS builds on that existing ecosystem.
The clearance means Medtronic can now push the system into hospitals and ambulatory surgery centers, targeting both straightforward and complex spinal cases with a single robotic platform.
