Section 230 Turns 30 as Big Tech Faces Legal Reckoning
The law that built the modern internet is facing its biggest test yet in upcoming court battles.
Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act just hit the three-decade mark. The landmark legislation gave tech platforms immunity from liability for user-generated content, essentially letting companies like Meta and Google grow into the giants they are today.
But that protection is about to get stress-tested. Multiple court cases targeting Meta, Alphabet, and other major platforms are working through the US legal system. These cases could fundamentally redraw the boundaries of what Section 230 actually shields.
The stakes are massive. If courts narrow the law's protections, platforms might face an avalanche of lawsuits over content moderation decisions. Too broad an interpretation keeps the status quo that critics say lets Big Tech off the hook.
Either way, the internet's foundational legal shield is heading for a serious shakeup.
