AWS Locks In STMicro as Chip Supplier, Stock Soars 5%
Amazon's cloud arm inks deal with Franco-Italian chipmaker for data center semiconductors.
AWS just secured a new semiconductor partner. The cloud giant signed a supply agreement with STMicroelectronics, the Franco-Italian chip manufacturer, sending STM stock up more than 5%.
The deal covers multiple chip categories. STMicro will provide AWS with high-bandwidth connectivity chips and power management components — both critical for running massive data center operations.
This is AWS doubling down on supply chain diversification. With semiconductor access becoming increasingly strategic, locking in dedicated suppliers makes sense. STMicro gets a guaranteed customer with enormous scale. AWS gets chip security.
The European chipmaker has been expanding its industrial and automotive semiconductor business. Landing AWS as a major client validates its data center play and gives investors something to cheer about.
